Astronomy is one of the oldest of the sciences, with its roots way back in some of the world's oldest civilisations. It is possible that some of the stone circles of the Peak District of Derbyshire were rudimentary observatories to enable early humans to determine their calendar.
Astronomy still fascinates people today. Here in Derbyshire you can still find dark skies and see the milky way without needing a pair of binoculars or a telescope. But don't just take our word for it, you can see for yourself by booking on to one of the astronomy residential courses that are organised in the area.
One provider is Skylark Holidays. They are based near Sutton on the Hill in the south of Derbyshire, within easy reach of Derby, Burton and Ashbourne and close to the Peak District and the National Forest. Their astronomy courses are either of 2 days or 5 days duration. On these courses for enthusiastic beginners you will learn about the Moon, planets and stars and gain the knowledge to find your way around the night sky and the basics of using a telescope. There may even be time to discuss cutting-edge cosmology - the origins of the universe! On the 5 day course you will also find out about the life cycles of the stars, the workings of the Sun and even find out about telescope construction. If the weather permits, you will be able to put your new knowledge into practice through observation of the night sky.
