A Taste of the
Peak District
Peak District, Derbyshire bike shops, cycle spares and repair …
Cycling is a very popular pastime in the Midlands probably because it has a wide variety of roads and tracks that appeal to all abilities and types of cyclist, road or off road.
Types of cycling.
In Staffordshire and Cheshire, there are hundreds of miles of quiet and relatively flat back lanes that are suitable for the occasional or leisure cyclist. You can enjoy the British countryside at a leisurley pace whilst taking in the fresh air and getting some exercise. For the keen road cyclist, Derbyshire and Yorkshire hold sway with challenging climbs such as Holme Moss and the Snake Pass. The Tour of Britain usually passes through the region for this very reason - to race the hills will separate the top cyclists from the bunch. For traffic free cycling, the Peak District probably has the most to offer with a number of converted former railway track beds dedicated to cyclists and walkers, trails such as the Manifold Track (also known as the Manifold Way), the Tissington Trail, the High Peak Trail, the Monsal Trail, Sett Valley Trail and more. These are well suited to family cycling as they are, in general, reasonably flat (the High Peak Trail at the Cromford end most certainly is not!!) and generally well surfaced. Although you don't share the route with motorised traffic, the Peak District Trails do meet and cross farm tracks and roads so it is necessary to heed the warning signs. At Cannock Chase, in Staffordshire, you can find some great manufactured trails. Since the Peak District is a National Park and has miles and miles of bridleways, you will not find any manufactured trails here. The off road mountain biking is high quality and in many cases very demanding, requiring strength, stamina and technical skills. Around the Dark Peak, you can find tough, steep ascents and descents.
