Tideswell Circular from Upperdale (in Miller's Dale)

A circuit of about 9/10 miles passing through two nature reserves.

Maps - White Peak or Dark Peak

Guides to walking in the Peak - see the 'booksales' section of this site or try Pub walks, tea shop walks or classic walks (in association with Amazon). Click here for views from walks (large files so will be slow - you have been warned!). If you are looking for somewhere to stay, try our accommodation section for a selection of self catering and bed and breakfast holiday accommodation.

OK, here is the walk outline ...

Map: Ordnance Survey 1:25 000 White Peak

Parking: Small car park at Upperdale near Cressbrook or if that is full, there is thePay and Display at the back of the Monsal Head Hotel which will add about a mile and a half to the circuit

Refreshments (tea shop, pub) and toilets at Monsal Head.

From Upperdale, cross the river Wye and follow the track upwards, under the Monsal Trail. On the other side, veer left to join the trail at the Miller's Dale station (or at least what was once the station). Leave the Monsal Trail to go into Litton Mill, left along the road and fork right on the path that takes you into the bottom end of Tideswell Dale. Tideswell Dale Nature reserve is managed by the Peak Park Authority and has both geological (basalt lava flow) and ecological aspects. It also has good disabled access and a RADAR key disabled toilet plus some pay and display parking. If you are interested in birdwatching, you may see the Marsh Tit. Other species that are relatively common are Blackcaps, Garden Warblers, Willow Warblers and Redstarts plus spotted flycatchers. Other warblers include Chiffchaff, Common Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat. Wood Warblers are not common but have occasionally been recorded as have Pied Flycatchers. Other birds often seen include Nuthatch, Treecreeper and Bullfinch

At the top of the dale, follow the road into Tideswell (though often when locals pronounce the name it sounds like Tidzer). The massive church is known as the 'Cathedral of the Peak' and it it worth a visit, particularly during the Harvest Festival. Leave Tideswell on the B6049 and just before it meets the A623, take the minor road to the right. Shortly after the building on the left, take the path across Litton Edge until it pops you out on the road out of Litton. Turn left and then take the path above the steep sides of Cressbrook Dale to the A623 at Wardlow Mires. Go along the road a short way to pick up the path back into Cressbrook Dale which is noted for its early orchids. Follow the path round the base of Peter's Stone after which it climbs toward the Wardlow Plateau. The path descends back through a fabulous woodland. Follow the path past the secluded Ravensdal Cottages where there is a small parking area used by climbers climbing Ravensdale crag, a fairly unfrequesnted Peak District climbing venue (with rubbish belays which is probably why!). Then you just follow the road back through Cressborook, past Cressbrook Mill and back to Upperdale.

Disclaimer - this is a brief outline, you should work out the full route for yourself using a map before setting off. Make sure that you and your party are suitably equipped and are fit enough.

The local tourist information office is at Bakewell.
