Belper North Mill was built by Jedediah Strutt and was probably the most technically advanced building of its era. It was a water powered cotton spinning mill. The Derwent Valley Visitors centre is situated in the mill and is a good stopping off point for a couple of hours. There you can pick up plenty of leaflets and take a tour (guided or independent) of the mill technology. In the tour you will see how the cotton industry developed from a cottage industry into big business. Many of the exhibits are original machines. Belper is well known for the nail industry, the local football club is known as the nailers. The nail workshop in the mill will inform you of the development of this industry. In recent years the mill complex has been revitalised and is the site for many local businesses.
Visitor centre opening times are 1 to 5 pm Wednesday to Sunday during March to the end of October. In winter, it does not open on a Wednesday and is closed for two weeks either side of Christmas. There is a German language leaflet and school parties are welcome by prior arrangement.
