     The Burbage Valley.

Park at the Fox House Inn or nearby. With the pub building on your left, head towards the corner of the car park, by the gun club outbuilding. There you will find a path that bears left and brings you down back towards the road. On the right, before reaching the road, there is a stile which gives access to the moorland. Cross the stile and take the path over the moors.

As you approach Burbage Edge South you have choices - either stay on the same path and follow the top of crags or cut down left onto the track that follows the floor of the valley. Personally, I prefer the path at the top of the Edge, which follows first the south edge and then, after a short gap, follows the top of Burbage Edge north. Both routes end up at more or less the same spot at the bridges at the north end of the Burbage Valley. Don’t bother going on to the road, just follow the path bearing left, below the road to cross the two streams.

After the second stream, there is a short steep ascent that can be quite slippery after rain. You are then at the main car park for the valley. A path leads away from the stile at the car park and takes you to Higgar Tor. From Higgar, you can see Carl Wark, a short distance to the south. From the top of Higgar Tor, pick up the path that takes you to, and passes over, Carl Wark. At Carl Wark you can examine the walls of the hill fort - probably iron age in origin. The path leads down towards Burbage Brook, the misfit stream that flows down the valley. Stay on the right bank of the stream (or cross it, it doesn’t really matter) back to the Sheffield - Hathersage road (care - very busy at times). Turn left and either go along the road all the way, or retrace your original steps, to the Fox House and treat yourself to a drink and some excellent food.
