Guided walks in the Peak District of Derbyshire - Guided by Peak District National Park Ranger Bob Findlow.
Grough-Stuff is a personal guided walk service for individuals or groups of people in and around the Peak District National Park.
If you are visiting the Peak District for the first time, don't know where best to walk or you are not confident in navigating safely across the moors. Maybe you would just like the reassurance and unique knowledge of a "local expert", then "Grough-Stuff" Walks is for you.
Walks can be tailored to suit you or your group!
Bob offers a variety of walks in a variety of places. Walks can be Easy, Moderate or Strenuous, depending on what you want:-
Easy: These routes should pose no problem for any averagely fit person, or for those wishing to cover longer distances on the flat. From 5 to 10 miles long.
Moderate: These are ideal walks for intermediate walkers, looking for a more challenging route. Usually, less than 10 miles long.
Strenuous: These are high-level walks with sections which may not be particularly suitable for beginners. The terrain is likely to be difficult underfoot. Usually, over 10 miles long.
The Choice is Yours!
Maybe there is a particular area that you want to explore, or maybe you want a mystery trip...anything is possible.
Bob is happy to meet up with you at your accommodation which makes it easier for you to find the start of the walk. Many of my walks are of a linear nature, making best use of public transport. The Manchester - Sheffield railway line bisects the Pennines at the point where the Gritstone of the Dark Peak meets the Limestone of the White Peak. It makes for a convenient method of starting and finishing many excellent walk routes.
Bob Findlow Introduces Himself ...
My name is Bob Findlow. I have been a Peak District National Park Ranger since 1991. Based in Hayfield for much of that time, I have gained extensive knowledge of Kinder Scout and the surrounding high moors of The Dark Peak.
As well as being a Ranger, I am Mountain Leader trained, qualified in first-aid and experienced in hill navigation.
In addition to my Ranger duties, I am also the co-founder and Chairman of Transpeak Walks (see www.transpeakwalks.co.uk ), a voluntary group, formed to take over responsibility for running the 'Station to Station' guided walks programme from The Hope Valley & High Peak Transport Partnership. So you can be assured that I am not new to the guided walks game!
Hopefully, my short resume has given you assurance that I know what I am doing and can offer you and your group, an exciting and enjoyable day out in the countryside of the Peak District.
Health & Safety
Your safety, and the well-being of the group, is my paramount concern! This is the main reason why I insist on a ratio of one leader to 8 walk participants. Please note - Groups of more than 8 people will require the support of a 'back-up' assistant. This additional cost will be reflected in the price/person payable. Please contact me to discuss.
You will be responsible for attending the walk in appropriate attire. The basic requirement for everyone, is to wear stout walking boots, have waterproof and warm clothing and to take sufficient food & drink for a full day on the hill.
Walking Tips
1. Take water, not fizzy drinks! 2. Don't wear Jeans! They soak up water and do not dry quickly. A recipe for disaster in cold conditions! 3. Wear sturdy boots, not Trainers! Trainers do not offer the required ankle support, have insufficient tread on the sole for muddy tracks and are not waterproof! At Grough-Stuff Walks you are paying for me to act as your own personal walking guide for the day.
The price you pay is all inclusive and covers the cost of my time and travel. In groups of more than 8 people, the price will be higher, as back-up assistant(s) will have to be enlisted for the day.
If you or your group have any special requirements, please call me to discuss. As previously mentioned, anything is possible. At Grough-Stuff Walks, I believe that taking a flexible approach is essential to ensure everyone enjoys their day out in the hills. Occasionally, taking a flexible approach means that there are times when a particular route will be deemed too risky based on the weather conditions or fitness of the group on the day. If this happens, an alternative route will be proposed. Should you not want to take the option of walking an alternative route, then you will be refunded your fee minus any travel expenses I may have incurred.
