The State of Florida is located in the southeastern region of the United States. Most of the state is a large peninsula with the Gulf of Mexico on its west and the Atlantic Ocean on its east. Its popularity as a holiday destination is probably because the climate is subtropical (tropical in the very south), however, it is also popular with Americans and is the 4th most populous state in the USA (correct at the time of writing). Florida was named by a Spanish explorer who landed there in April 1513. Florida has been inhabited for thousands of years. The colonisation of Florida by Europeans was a three way affair, between the French, Spanish and English, eventually, after some fighting and subterfuge, the English gained control of Florida via diplomatic channels in the so-called Peace of Paris. The Spanish regained control through the Treaty of Versailles and about 80 years later ceded Florida to the USA.

Tourism makes up the largest sector of the state economy. Warm weather and hundreds of miles of beaches attract about 60 million visitors to the state every year. Amusement parks, especially in the Orlando area, make up a significant portion of tourism. The Walt Disney World Resort is the largest vacation resort in the world, consisting of four theme parks and more than 20 hotels in Lake Buena Vista, Florida; it, and Universal Orlando Resort, Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, and other major parks drive state tourism. Many beach towns are also popular tourist destinations, particularly in the winter.
