Photographs of the Auvergne - here you can get a flavour of the countryside of the Auvergne.

Situated just to the north of the Cevennes and Aveyron, the Auvergne is often neglected by holidaymakers heading further south. The Auvergne comprises the departments of Cantal, Allier and Puy-de-Dome in the Massif Central of France.

Winters in the Auvergne can be harsh in the mountains, despite the fact that they are much lower than the Alps. This image shows the Hamlet of Le Luguet, about an hour's drive south of Clermont Ferrand. It is at the altitude of Ben Nevis in Scotland (more or less).

The following image shows dawn in the Massif Central, Auvergne. Here the characteristic ‘Puys’ (the cores of old volcanoes) can be seen poking up from the mist down in the valley.

Chateaux abound, both intact and ruined ...

There is plenty of other interesting architecture too. The churches are often Romanesque in style and you can find many old buildings in the towns and villages of the Auvergne. Here is a 15th century building in the old town of Billom.
