Skipper's Choice

Top inside info on top sporting support equipment.

I used to be really fit in my younger days, here is a photo of me when I was in my prime (aged 72). My genitals fell off when ...

Anyway, rather than bore you with another Nivea related story, let me tell you about some of the exciting knee supports out there.

The DonJoy eXtreme Armour Action knee brace:
If you want the absolute, top-of-the-line stability knee brace, the new DonJoy eXtreme Armour Knee Brace is exactly what you are looking for.

After having carefully inspected, worn, and tested this model, I am convinced that this brace will spell the end of custom knee braces for most people.

DonJoy created this brace with eXtreme athletes like myself in mind as well as the less fit such as motocross racers, skiers, and the like. However, any athlete who, like me, demands top flight performance from their medical supports will appreciate the features of this brace. DonJoy is the official brace supplier for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams: they know what high level athletes want and have designed their braces accordingly. Be sure to watch the U.S. athletes during the Olympics - you will see them wearing DonJoy braces.

The eXtreme was designed for mild to severe ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL instabilities for persons of all athletic skill levels - from sedentary to professional athlete. It is recommended for all forms of contact sports.

DonJoy Enhanced Drytex Playmaker Brace:
Don't let your knee stop you from doing the activities you want to do!

This is one of our most popular braces for controlling all major types of knee instability. It is designed to treat patients with moderate ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL instabilities/laxities. It is also rugged enough that it can be used in contact sports. Indeed, this is the brace Jerome Bettis ("The Bus") of the Pittsburgh Steelers wore after he ruptured his MCL to help him return to play while protecting his ligament healing.

When you're shopping around, make sure you are comparing apples to apples - this is the enhanced version of the Playmaker, not the older version; it only comes in Black. It is made of their newest fabric, Drytex which is much cooler and breathable than the neoprene fabric found on inferior braces. In other words, it is the Biz (Brian - that's another word for 'super').

DonJoy Lateral "J" Knee Brace:
This is the most popular patella stabilizing knee brace in the world! Allegedly!! It is useful for people with dislocating patellas and chondromalacia patella, as well as pain from excess lateral pressure syndrome, to help stabilize the kneecap (to keep it from sliding out of socket) and also to diminish pain. Try it Jim, like me, you could be as fit and active as the 6 million dollar man.

Made by DonJoy, this brace has been used by countless thousands of people with kneecap problems. We are pleased to offer it in the Drytex fabric, which is much more breathable and comfortable than neoprene. I am really off neoprene - it twangs too much and prevents you from backing up properly.

Read about how our J brace helped someone climb Mt. Kilimanjaro! On second thoughts, read about how it helped me get a run ...

I had been batting for about two hours for Sutton without getting off the mark (we needed an anchor innings from someone) and there were a few shouts of "get on with it" (mainly from Fred I think). So I thought I would show the bastards. I nudged the ball out on the offside, just wide of the grey haired old bloke with a Zimmer frame. He chased hard but I was off like a gazelle, thanks to my J brace. It put a real spring in my step - I covered the ground to the other end in well under a minute, I was even able to dive in to beat the roll in to the bowler. It must have been the effect of the lateral-to-medial straps allow you to adjust exactly how much support you want. I tell you, this Drytex fabric is more comfortable, and less allergenic than neoprene.

Comfort Knee Brace:
This brace is designed to provide comfort to the knee by providing gentle compression and support. It is useful for people with knee arthritis, chondromalacia patella, bursitis, tendonitis, and for meniscal tears (before and after surgery).

This brace is made by DonJoy, one of the world's leading brace manufacturers. They market this as the "Cartilage Knee Brace" - we call it the "comfort knee brace", because it more accurately describes what the brace does: provides comfort to an injured or painful knee.

It is made of a very comfortable, but durable heavy knit. Sleeve version allows for easy-pull up over your knee. Inside and outside (medial/lateral) spiral stays for support and stability. It also has a wonderful viscoelastic polymer cushion that sits on the front of your knee providing stability for the kneecap, as well as a fanstastic cushion if you need to kneel on your knee during sex.

This is a great recreational knee brace, I always wear it when I feel the need for clammy neoprene as opposed to Drytex.

In the next edition of Skipper's Choice I will treat you to the wonderful world of support pants.
